Sugilite is among the rarest purple silicate minerals in the gemstone world, first described in 1944 by Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi. Although minor occurrences exist elsewhere, the most significant gem-quality material originated from the Wessels Mine in South Africa’s Kalahari Manganese Field — a source that is now largely depleted. As a result, fine sugilite is increasingly regarded as finite and highly collectible.
This specimen exhibits the saturated violet to deep royal-purple coloration for which premium-grade sugilite is distinguished.
Beyond its mineralogical significance, sugilite has been associated in metaphysical traditions with spiritual insight and protective qualities — associations that have further elevated its desirability among collectors and practitioners alike.
A refined and increasingly rare addition to any discerning mineral collection.
