Peridot forms deep within the Earth’s mantle, approximately 20–55 miles below the surface, and is brought to light through volcanic activity—making it one of the few gemstones formed far beneath the Earth’s crust. In rare cases, peridot has also been found in meteorites, linking it to both Earth and outer space.

It has been valued since ancient times, particularly in Egyptian culture, where it was known as the “gem of the sun.” It is believed that some of the emeralds worn by Cleopatra may have actually been peridot.
